This residency is made possible through the support from Rei Foundation.

Sa Sa Art Projects is pleased to welcome you to an open studio by our current Pisaot artist-in-residence Sin Many who has spent the past eight weeks researching and experimenting on new works. This residency is made possible through the support from Rei Foundation.

Sin Many shows two series of works for this residency. He is interested in exploring and focusing on the texture of his materials. The first series of works consist in three paintings made with burlap canvases. He chooses burlap for its rough texture as he leaves some exposed parts of the material for viewing, exposing its originality. The use of shapes and colors in the paintings are inspired by the neighborhood of BKK3. They represent life and movements of the people. Many tries to capture forms of over-layering iron bar houses by looking upon the idea of security, being protected and being imprisoned and breaking them into simple lines. He is fascinated with the idea of protection because it is comforting for him to know that the mentality of people makes them take safety precautions into their own hands. Those iron bars protect a person’s belongings and a person’s life from being taken away but at same times, the bars imprison this same person. They represent a strong protection for the people but also the fragility of community security as a whole. Many also looks at the functionality and decorative purpose of the materials and how they shape the well-being of their owners.

There are six abstract works for his second series. They are textured paintings. Many takes a try on playing with colors and a use papers to create texture. They are mostly serving aesthetic purposes. They are also pleasing to touch. For this reason, the artist has the pleasure to invite the viewers to have a feel at them.
