About us

Sa Sa Art Projects is a Cambodian artist-run space dedicated to experimental and critical contemporary art practices. It was founded in 2010 by the Cambodian arts collective Stiev Selapak and operated from the historic and vibrant apartment complex known as the White Building until 2017 when the building was demolished for new development.

At its new location, Sa Sa Art Projects has shifted toward a stronger engagement with Cambodian young artists and art graduates while continuing to build a deeper dialogue with artists within Asia through its creative education programs, exhibitions, its signature Pisaot Artist Residency, and other Special collaborative projects.

Sa Sa Art Projects is an experimental mechanism which addresses Cambodia's lack of infrastructure for contemporary art education and engagement by creating space for critical discussion. We believe that by not being bound to a rigid organisational structure, Sa Sa Art Projects can evolve organically to adapt to the changing context and needs of the communities with which we work.

Closing Sa Sa Art Projects

2010 - 2024

Dear friends and partners, We are writing to announce the closure of Sa Sa Art Projects. After 14 years of operation, we decided to close the chapter. Due to the ongoing funding struggle, it has become harder and harder for us to plan our program well ahead while maintaining the space-based operation. We have come this far through a combination of effort and chances that come our way with many generous partners and friends. However, without the security of core funding to cover the annual operational cost, we cannot continue. We have been very fortunate to work with many incredible partners and supporters, both locally and internationally, which has allowed Sa Sa to grow over the years. Starting from humble beginnings at the now-demolished White Building in 2010, Sa Sa has evolved into different forms, running various programs to be responsive to Cambodia’s growing contemporary art ecology. From art classes, artist residencies, exhibitions, and art auctions to collaborative projects and festivals, Sa Sa has been unwaveringly exploring and realizing different mechanisms to facilitate the development of the contemporary visual arts with the artists, the audience, and collaborators in Cambodia and beyond. Many students and artists who came through our programs have moved on in their respective practices. They are now actively engaged locally, regionally, and internationally in various exhibitions, residencies, and projects. Sa Sa is highly honored to be a critical part of their respective and collective journeys. We are still determined to continue working with the Cambodian contemporary arts. Hence, Sa Sa members will continue to work independently in this field. We want to express our gratitude to the Rei Foundation for their generous support and fruitful collaboration, which has propelled Sa Sa to be ambitious and more systematic in our thinking and work. We also want to extend our thanks to Larry Strange, who has been an integral local supporter, both financially and technically, over the years. We are incredibly grateful for our recent partners and collaborators, with whom we could co-develop various exciting international projects: UNSW Sydney, The Museum Collective, documenta 15, Kadist, Han Nefkens Foundation, and 16albermarle Project Space. We are also thankful for our previous donors and supporters – individuals and institutions – since our early days. We are indebted to the visual artists in Cambodia and beyond who have inspired us, supported us, and become integral parts of the Sa Sa family. Best wishes, Sa Sa Art Projects team (Vuth Lyno, Chum Chanveasna, Khvay Samnang, Lim Sokchanlina, Kong Siden, Ratha Raksa & Preap Sidalen)
