Phal Open Studio by Kong Channa

Friday May 21, 2010
Sa Sa Art Projects, #26-28 E2, White Building, Sothearos Blvd.
In Khmer and English translation.

Official launch of Sa Sa Art Projects and the opening of art exhibition entitled ‘Phal’ by our artist-in-residence Kong Channa, on Friday May 21, 2010 at 6pm at Sa Sa Art Projects, the Building, Sothearos Blvd.

Looking at this sculpture, it doesn’t seem to have an exact shape. It seems like a bell, a linga, fish trap, or other tool. When people sit inside the sculpture, listen to music, move their bodies or shake their heads, they seem like fishes being caught in a fish trap. I put the title for this work as ‘Phal’ because I want to talk about result that we receive, result that we don’t receive, or consequence. I use bamboo for this work because Cambodians use bamboo to build houses and a variety of tools such as fish traps, fruit containers, and many other household items.
