Yuji
China
Yu Ji (b. 1985, Shanghai) is known for the diversity of her practice, dealing chiefly with sculptures and installations, as well as performances and videos. Her long-term interest has been an ongoing investigation into specific loci that are charged with geographical and historical narratives. She frequently conducts field research and is keen on creating interventions in a bodily manner at different sites. Taking the unique materiality of things as a point of departure, and taking the sculptural as her primary form, Yu Ji has been developing gradually and prolifically her artistic language in relation to the everyday life. Reflecting and moderating the fragile presence of the human in relation to the objects found in their everyday environment, her performances which often coincide with exhibitions of her sculptural works turn the space of art into a site of labour.
Yu Ji's work has been presented at various art institutions including Palais des Tokyo in Paris, CAFA Art Museum in Beijing, Yuz Museum Shanghai, and Times Museum in Guangzhou. She has exhibited at the 11th Gwangju Biennale and the 11th Shanghai Biennale, both in 2016. Yu Ji is one of the four finalists for HUGO BOSS Asia Art Award 2017, and has recently completed a seven months’ residency program at the Pavillon Neuflize OBC, Palais de Tokyo. Yu Ji is also a co-founder and curator of Am Art Space, one of the few not-for-profit, artist-run spaces active in Shanghai since 2008. Yu Ji graduated from Shanghai Fine Art College with a Master’s degree in 2011. Yu Ji lives and works in Shanghai and Vienna.
