Time, light and movement are some of the core elements of the moving image in visual art. Perhaps that’s the most straightforward way to define the practices of video art and artists film, which are broad terms that carry the distinct histories of film, video, photography and performance, and might be shown in a cinema, on television or exhibited in a gallery. This talk proposes a starting point to frame these different approaches, and discusses international artists who were innovators in the way that they use the medium of the moving image from the early 20th century to the present day.
