Vera Lossau & Amit Goffer Germany & Israel

Vera Lossau (b. 1976, Haan, Germany) lives and works in Duesseldorf, Germany. After graduating at the Kunstakademie Duesseldorf, Germany, she completed her Master’s degree at the Chelsea College of Art & Design, England. Lossau was awarded several grants and awards.

Lossau’s artistic approach involves a range of sculptural techniques and materials such as diverse casting methods, paper collages, neon-lights etc, in which she creates with many layers and facets. She transfers cultural metaphors beyond time- or space-related parameters into her very own presence of sculpture, collage or installation. At the same time and through what seems to appear as a riddle, she draws attentions towards the emotional, individual and very human condition which she is facing as an individual.

Lossau works with topics and notions like the destabilisation of predefined or encrusted structures, the absurd play and the coincidence, the processual character in everything, the possibilities of fragmentation etc. These topics define her artistic strategy. Lossau’s work is far from linear; she encircles the thematic fields of her artistic research and tries to keep them open. These result in unexpected or interdisciplinary forms of presentation. Lossau doesn’t work explicitly on narrative. Her work is nevertheless based on the world of imagery – or imaginary; images that are inscribed into our collective memory, and combined via different artistic forms of expression that shape their own actualised dialogues and narratives.

Her diverse and multifaceted work is part of several private and public collections. She has presented works at major cultural institutions and museums, such as the Museum Schloss Moyland (Germany), Museum Morsbroich (Germany), Museum Kunstpalast Duesseldorf (Germany), the Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst (Germany), the Janco Dada Museum (Israel), the Irish Museum of Modern Art - IMMA (Ireland), the Olbricht Collection (Germany), and a number of independent and non-commercial spaces. Together with Amit Goffer and the team of the Betonbox, Duesseldorf, she initiated an ongoing artist’s exchange project with the Alfred Institute Tel Aviv (Israel).

Amit Goffer (b.1979, Tel Aviv, Israel) lives and works in Düsseldorf/Neuss, Germany. He graduated from the Kunstakademie Duesseldorf, Germany (2011-2012) and HaMidrasha – Faculty of the Arts, Beit Berl College, Israel (2008). He was awarded several grants including by the DAAD and the County of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Goffer’s work in¬vestigates the complexities of physical, mental and emotional conditions of the viewer relating to the spaces the artist creates. He is intrigued by the narratives taken from everyday experiences as well as social and political challenges and their meaning for dif¬ferent people who coexist in this way or another. By working in various cultural forms of expression and perception, his work seeks to deal with metapho¬rical aspects of architecture and the spaces in which they can be manifes¬ted. Goffer refers in his work to conditions of intense pressure, such as situations of observing and of being ob¬served, migration and the existence of hope.

The materials Goffer works with are constructed into temporary structures that can be disassembled into parts and relocated to alternative situations. These structures resemble building systems, which exist in similar forms everywhere - boats, playgrounds, bunker structures, military fences, technologies etc. These bulky materials possess an austere aesthetic that Goffer incorporates into his works along with new media technologies such as cameras, lights, glow in the dark material and more. He frequently offers performa¬tive elements for the viewer to join and requi¬res the visitor’s interaction in order for the installation itself to be fully revealed and interpreted.

Goffer has presented works at majors exhibitions and institutions such as the OpenART Biennale (Sweden), the Kunstmuseum Bochum (Germany), Performance of Marina in "Arena", MACBA Museum (Spain), the Museum Kunstpalast Duesseldorf (Germany), Museum Baden, Solingen (Germany), Kunstverein Konstanz/Kreuzlingen (Germany/Switzerland), Diekirch (Luxembourg), Kunstverein Duisburg (Germany); S12 Gallery (Norway), MMIII Kunstverein Mönchengladbach (Germany), Suzanne Dellal Center (Israel), Alfred Cooperative Institute for Art & Culture in Tel Aviv (Israel).
