Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai

Vietnam

Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai (b. 1983, Ha Noi, Vietnam) works in a variety of media, including installation, photography and video. Her earlier works concentrated on issues relating to women’s rights and experiences in Asia. Recently, her practice has turned to questions of identity, both personal and collective, including issues of migrants' rights and experiences. She explores the complex relationships between individuals and society, and the place of fantasy and imagination in people’s concept of their identities.

Her solo exhibitions include “Day by Day,” at SA SA BASSAC, Phnom Penh, and at Sao La Art Space of Ho Chi Minh Fine Arts Museum, Ho Chi Minh City (2015); “The Scar,” at Craig Thomas Gallery, Ho Chi Minh City (2012). Select recent group exhibitions include "Another World," at Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2016); “Spring Watching Pavilion,” at Void Art Center, Derry, Nothern Ireland (2015); “Swimming in Sand, Planting Rice Under an Umbrella,” at Novacncy, Melbourne (2014); and “Meeting,” New Space Arts Foundation Gallery, Hue (2013).

Mai graduated from Hue College of Arts in 2006 and completed her MA in Visual Arts at the Mahasarakham University, Thailand in 2012. She was a 2014 recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant, and a finalist of 2015 Sovereign Asian Art Prize. Mai has undertaken residency programs at Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2015-16) with the support of KfW Stiftung; Sa Sa Art Projects, Phnom Penh (2014); HIVE Studio, Cheongju, South Korea (2013); New Space Arts Foundation, Hue (2013); and Sàn Art Loboatory, Ho Chi Minh City (2012).
