Hsu Chia-Wei

Taiwan

Hsu Chia-Wei (b. 1983, Taichung, Taiwan) is interested in the forgotten histories of the Cold War in Asia. His works develop a keen sensitivity that weaves together reality and illusion, history and the present. Through the critical use of film, he constructs mythical narratives that complicate and linger between fiction and reality, and expose events, people and places that are off-screen in the traditional history making.

Chia-Wei was a finalist for 2013 Hugo Boss Asia Art Award. He graduated from the Graduate School of Plastic Art, National Taiwan University of Art. Chia-Wei has participated in several residency programs including at Le Fresnoy - Studio National des Arts Contemporains, Tourcoing (2014-2016), Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2014), and the International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP), New York City (2010).

Recent solo exhibitions include “Huai Mo Village,” Hong-Gah Museum, Taipei (2016); “Position 2,” Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven (2015); and “On the Margin of Places,” Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2014). Select group exhibitions include Taipei Biennial 2016, Taipei Fine Arts Museum; NexT International Film Festival, Bucharest (2016); 4th Taiwan International Video Art Exhibition, Hong-Gah Museum, Taipei (2014); Venice Biennale 2013; Liverpool Biennial 2012; “Les Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin/Madrid,” Centre Pompidou, Paris (2011); and the 39th International Film Festival Rotterdam (2010).

Lin Wen-Tsao (b. 1977, Taichung, Taiwan) is interested in daily life experiences in the environmental and social ecology through investigation of fields, spaces, sounds and their absence. He uses photography, painting, drawing, text and mixed media installation, to explore and manipulate the experiential functions of symbolism and geometric abstraction that concerns space making.

Wen-Tsao is the President of the Board of Directors of the Art Creator Trade Union and Art Director of Jing Lu Gallery. He was an artist-in-resident at 98B COLLABoratory, Manila, supported by Bamboo Curtain Studio and the Taiwan’s Council for Cultural Affairs (2015); and an international fellow at Vermont Studio Center, the United States (2011). From 2014 to 2015, he coordinated the Bamboo Curtain Studio’s lecture series program. Wen-Tsao holds a BFA from the California State University, Long Beach.
